Who is urusai.social for?

Otaku, weebs, anime, manga, and gaming fans!

The expectation is that people on this instance will be intersted in anime and anime-adjacent content. You can expect the local timeline to be a lot of things related to otaku culture.

You can also write about other things too! We welcome all sorts of content, in the hopes that your interests will align well with other users on this instance, even if they expand beyond otaku topics. Also you can use Mastodon's post publicity options (posts visible everywhere; visible but not in search; only to followers etc.) if you're writing about something that you think might be overly off-topic.

There are things that are disallowed here: see Server Rules and Code of Conduct (TL;DR: be a sensible, nice human being).

Why does this exist? What's the point?

Good question!

When I wanted to migrate away from Twitter, I immediately looked for an anime-themed Mastodon instance but everything I found had....highly questionable moderation policies. I couldn't find a wholesome place where I could be an anime and gaming nerd while feeling comfortable letting my wife see my screen.

So I registered on mastodon.gamedev.place but found my timeline was sorely missing the sweet, sweet animemes and anime news I craved. So I spun up an AWS instance and got rocking with urusai.social (fun fact: we were almost kyuniverse.moe). I wanted to build a home for positive celebration of otaku culture, where people of all sorts would feel comfortable and welcomed.

Who runs this? How long will you run it? Can I trust you?

I'm neatchee; I work at Bungie, Inc. and have been a gamer, weeb, and tech geek for as long as I can remember.

I intend to keep this running as long as it seems to be useful. This isn't facebook or twitter; there's no huge live-ops team making the whole thing run smoothly though. The server might get hammered at times; or it might have an hour or two downtime when software upgrades are done. We're hosted on Amazon AWS and can scale the server as needed, to a point; we'll try to keep operation as smooth as possible. But again, hiccups might occur once in a while. Be patient; also... it's only a social network :)

I'm paying for the server costs myself; that's fine, I'm not looking for any help/crowdfunding/whatever in that area at this time. If we continue to grow, I may put up a Patreon or something.

Whether you can trust me (and other moderators) to be welcoming and just? I don't know, your call. I'll try my best to be.
